PSLE is just a few months away and English is the first subject to be tested - we spoke to Eunice, Head of Zenith Academy, to distill her thoughts on how best to support our young learners.
Q: Hi Eunice, as we approach the first PSLE paper, the English Oral Examination, what do you think parents should have top of mind?
Eunice: Hello PSLE parents! I would say that at this juncture, it is important for us to note that more may not mean better. Kids already know what they need to know in terms of content. Ensuring that our kids are able to start the PSLE strong, by feeling confident and being ready both mentally and emotionally, can go a long way!
Q: Sounds super helpful! Is there a specific study tip that you always share with your students at this point in time?
Eunice: I would advise students to look through their past work, be it mistakes, strengths, or achievements, and to take time to reflect on where one has done well or can do better. Students, you are already well-prepared from all the hard work in the past few years - you'll do great!
Q: Amazing, thanks for sharing that! With regard to the English examination, which component do you think deserves the most attention?
Eunice: Given that the English Paper 1 accounts for approximately 25% of the subject's grade and Composition writing forms a big part of this, I would recommend extra attention to this component as one must ace this component to do well overall.
My 3 tips for Composition writing at this juncture would be:
- take time to plan before diving into writing
- remember what you've been taught in class - use writing techniques that you are familiar and comfortable with
- don't forget to read through what you've written and check for adherence to the topic
Q: To close off, any final message to our PSLE parents and students
Eunice: Take a breather when you need it. Speak to your peers and loved ones for support, or perhaps even offer your support to them. The PSLE is just one stepping stone in one's educational journey, and you have been preparing for this since you started Primary school! 🙂
Q: Thank you again Eunice, this has been very insightful!
