Singaporean Family reading a book together

A recent global study found that Singaporean Primary 4 students rank highest in reading literacy among their peers worldwide.

However, the same article also mentioned a significant decline in the enjoyment of reading, marking the lowest level seen in over a decade.

Beyond academic benefits, reading has the potential to become a lifelong habit that can help improve one's communication, accumulate knowledge of the world, and build creativity and imagination.

Here are some strategies to help your child turn the page on disinterest and develop a love for reading.

Be a Role Model

Children frequently emulate the actions of their parents. If they see you enjoying a good book, they are more likely to follow suit.

Set aside dedicated time for family reading sessions, creating a moment where everyone can share their favorite stories and recommendations.

This not only strengthens family bonds but also reinforces the idea that reading can be a pleasurable and shared activity.

Explore Diverse Book Genres

Variety is the spice of life, and the same goes for books. Introduce your child to a range of genres – from adventure and mystery to fantasy and non-fiction.

Not only does this keep things interesting, but it also helps children discover their preferences and develop a more nuanced understanding of the world of books.

Celebrate Small Achievements

Set achievable reading goals and celebrate your child's achievements. It could be finishing a challenging book, reaching a certain number of pages, or exploring a new genre.

Acknowledging their accomplishments reinforces the positive relationship with reading.

Don't be afraid to skip books

Started on a new book but not fully engaged by it? It is not always a bad thing to put that book aside. In fact, it empowers your child to find joy in reading sooner rather than later.

Just be careful not to let it become a habit.

Creating a Reading Corner at Home

Designate a cosy corner in your home as a reading haven. Furnish it with soft cushions, a beloved blanket, and a shelf filled with age-appropriate books.

This personalised space becomes a comfortable retreat where your child can immerse themselves in captivating stories, promoting a positive and intimate connection with reading.

Making Library Trips an Exciting Outing

Regular visits to the local library can turn the mundane task of obtaining books into an exciting adventure. Allow your child to choose their books, fostering a sense of autonomy and excitement.

Many libraries also host events or reading programs, adding an extra layer of enjoyment and community engagement to the reading experience.

Nurturing Growth Beyond the Classroom

Through these tips, we hope to be able to inspire more parents to cultivate in their children a love for reading.

By creating an environment where reading is valued and encouraged at home, it establishes the foundation for every child to develop lifelong learning habits.

Happy reading!
