Since 2023, primary schools have been doing away with mid-year examinations with the move aiming to reduce the focus on testing and to place greater emphasis on learning.
This comes after the successful removal of mid-year examinations for Primary 3 and 5 students in recent years, resulting in positive outcomes such as:
1) Better teaching pace
2) Enhanced students' learning experiences
3) More time for holistic development
What criteria are students currently being evaluated upon?
Students are evaluated based on a range of assessment methods designed by the school to align with learning objectives.
These methods may encompass weighted assessments (WA) and classroom assignments, aimed at enhancing learning and facilitating feedback from teachers.
What are Weighted Assessments?
Weighted assessments are a method for evaluating students' understanding of a specific subject and building their confidence in learning.
Typically, there is one weighted assessment per subject in each term from Terms 1 to 3.
The scores achieved in these assessments contribute to a student's final grade in a subject for the academic year.
These WAs may take various forms, such as:
1) Performance tasks (group presentations or project work)
2) Tests (timed written assessments)
The following table illustrates an example of how the weighting of assessments may be distributed.
