Since 2023, primary schools have been doing away with mid-year examinations with the move aiming to reduce the focus on testing and to place greater emphasis on learning.

This comes after the successful removal of mid-year examinations for Primary 3 and 5 students in recent years, resulting in positive outcomes such as:

1) Better teaching pace

2) Enhanced students' learning experiences

3) More time for holistic development

What criteria are students currently being evaluated upon?

Students are evaluated based on a range of assessment methods designed by the school to align with learning objectives.

These methods may encompass weighted assessments (WA) and classroom assignments, aimed at enhancing learning and facilitating feedback from teachers.

What are Weighted Assessments?

Weighted assessments are a method for evaluating students' understanding of a specific subject and building their confidence in learning.

Typically, there is one weighted assessment per subject in each term from Terms 1 to 3.

The scores achieved in these assessments contribute to a student's final grade in a subject for the academic year.

These WAs may take various forms, such as:

1) Performance tasks (group presentations or project work)

2) Tests (timed written assessments)

The following table illustrates an example of how the weighting of assessments may be distributed.

How does this change differ from what was done before?

The removal of mid-year examinations grants teachers an extra three weeks of curriculum time. This extension allows them to introduce a broader array of interactive teaching methods, fostering student-driven learning and the development of key competencies.

Consequently, they let your child focus on learning and personal growth without excessive emphasis on grades.

This is consistent with MOE's shift towards holistic education, moving away from a heavy focus on grades and placing greater value on the overall growth and well-being of students.

And as parents, you may be heartened to hear that our children's educational journey is prioritised with a balanced focus on both academic achievement and personal development.
